Acne and it's relationship with diet is a very controversial subject. However, the relationship with food allergies and acne are more recognized and agreed upon. A common food allergy is gluten, a protein found in wheat and rye. Let's look at an intolerance to gluten.

If you are allergic to gluten it can lead to acne because of the strain placed on your digestive system. Your body treats the gluten as a foreign body that is a threat to you. Symptoms include coughing, runny nose, watery eyes, acne and hives.

Since the body treats the gluten as a harmful substance it does all it can to get rid of it. This includes increased production of sebum (oil). The excess production of sebum blocks your pores, causes inflammation resulting in an acne break out.

If you have a food allergy to gluten then following a gluten free diet may be all you need to do to clear your acne. It may seem difficult to follow such a diet at first because grains, which contain gluten, are common in foods such as bread, pasta and cereal.

Food allergies can go undetected for a long time so you may not know if you are allergic to gluten or have any other allergies. If you have acne it's best to seek medical advice about food allergies sooner rather than later. That way you can rule them out and concentrate on finding the real culprit that's causing your acne. Many people also assume they'd know it they had an allergy but sometimes people don't have many symptoms other than acne.
